چکیده

In a previous paper with Adam Brandenburger, we used sheaf theory to analyze the structure of non-locality and contextuality. Moreover, on the basis of this formulation, we showed that the phenomena of non-locality and contextuality can be characterized precisely in terms of obstructions to the existence of global sections. Our aim in the present work is to build on these results, and to use the powerful tools of sheaf cohomology to study the structure of non-locality and contextuality. We use the Cech cohomology on an abelian presheaf derived from the support of a probabilistic model, viewed as a compatible family of distributions, in order to define a cohomological obstruction for the family as a certain cohomology class. This class vanishes if the family has a global section. Thus the non-vanishing of the obstruction provides a sufficient (but not necessary) condition for the model to be contextual. We show that for a number of salient examples, including PR boxes, GHZ states, the PeresMermin magic square, and the 18-vector configuration due to Cabello et al. giving a proof of the Kochen-Specker theorem in four dimensions, the obstruction does not vanish, thus yielding cohomological witnesses for contextuality.

On the Cohomology of Contextuality

Recent work by Abramsky and Brandenburger used sheaf theory to give a mathematical formulation of non-locality and contextuality. By adopting this viewpoint, it has been possible to define cohomological obstructions to the existence of global sections. In the present work, we illustrate new insights into different aspects of this theory. We shed light on the power of detection of the cohomologi...

Detecting Contextuality: Sheaf Cohomology and All vs Nothing Arguments

The main topic of this thesis is the study of contextuality, a key characteristic feature of quantum mechanics that represents one of the most valuable resources for quantum computation. We will adopt the sheaf-theoretic approach to non-locality and contextuality introduced in [AB11]. This elegant mathematical theory will enable us to consider contextuality on a higher scale, as a general, abst...

The Sheaf-Theoretic Structure Of Non-Locality and Contextuality

Locality and non-contextuality are intuitively appealing features of classical physics, which are contradicted by quantum mechanics. The goal of the classic no-go theorems by Bell, Kochen-Specker, et al. is to show that non-locality and contextuality are necessary features of any theory whose predictions agree with those of quantum mechanics. We use the mathematics of sheaf theory to analyze th...

Effect Algebras, Presheaves, Non-locality and Contextuality

Non-locality and contextuality are among the most counterintuitive aspects of quantum theory. They are difficult to study using classical logic and probability theory. In this paper we start with an effect algebraic approach to the study of non-locality and contextuality. We will see how different slices over the category of set valued functors on the natural numbers induce different settings i...

Non-Locality, Contextuality and Transition Sets

We discuss quantum non-locality and contextuality using the notion of transition sets [1, 2]. This approach provides a way to obtain a direct logical contradiction with locality/non-contextuality in the EPRB gedanken experiment as well as a clear graphical illustration of what violations of Bell inequalities quantify. In particular, we show graphically how these violations are related to measur...
